cassies mom isnt perfect; shes too lax, especially with cassie since lexi is significantly more mature, grounded, and thoughtful about her actions (not because her mom necessarily taught her to be that way, more likely because shes the older sister, saw what drugs did to rue, learned that to get out you gotta stay in, etc.). their mother is an alcoholic obv, loosely following the trope of the cigarette mom and it shows in the fact that shes pretty unavailable. shes there for cass thru her abortion, break ups, etc. but its more of a reactive role rather than a preventative one. this isnt to say she should be a helicopter mom, but maybe don't openly allow your high school daughter to first date a college student and then a domestic abuser? (she didn't know about nate, but that in itself proves my point, and her lack of concern over nate potentially abusing her daughter is concerning since she seems to be in the know of these things). she clearly hasn't set forth the right examples, support, or morals for her daughter because shes so "free form" and likely figured lexi's nature would influence cassie's or that "success" with lexi meant her parenting wasn't to blame for bad behavior/recklessness/immaturity, etc.. she should very likely be more communicative with cassie for all this. it doesn't mean supporting her or absolving her of guilt, but guiding her through the situation. making sure shes safe, that she understands why people are upset, why shes definitely at fault, and how to handle the social backlash of it in a way that holds her accountable AND safe instead of dismissing her attempt (which was clearly a cry for attention, yes, but again, this proves my point, since cassies biggest problem is her constant seeking of approval and attention from older, more "serious" people). however, no parent is perfect, and considering her addiction and single motherhood, she has demonstrated her genuine love, care, and support for her daughters. she's doing her best, which doesn't absolve her of responsibility for what she lacks/her unavailability, but should be recognized. shes surprisingly complex compared to most of the other parents (obv excluding Cal) and her little screentime, but probably one of my favorite representation of single motherhood and the cigarette mom trope since it doesnt just box her into the neglectful, "man-to-man," abusive, and aggressive cliches unfortunately ascribed in most other medias.
